4. Understanding SMS Segments
What is a segment?
SMS messages have character limits set by mobile carriers. When your message exceeds these limits, it's automatically split into multiple segments. They are individual SMS messages sent together as one notification.
ShippyPro bills per segment sent, not per notification.
Character limits by encoding
Standard encoding (GSM-7) - used for most Latin-script messages in English, Italian, French, German, and similar languages:
- Single segment: up to 160 characters
- Multiple segments: up to 153 characters per segment
Unicode encoding (UCS-2) — automatically applied when your message contains special characters such as: á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ, ç, ü, €, or emojis:
- Single segment: up to 70 characters
- Multiple segments: up to 67 characters per segment
Billing examples
| Message | Length | Encoding | Segments | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your order #12345 has been shipped and will arrive tomorrow. | 60 chars | GSM-7 | 1 | 1× price |
| Dear customer, your order #12345 containing 3 items has been picked up by the courier and is now in transit. Feel free to contact us to receive support for your shipment | 169 chars | GSM-7 | 2 | 2× price |
| 143 chars | Unicode | 3 | 3× price |
Tips to optimize SMS costs
- Keep messages concise. Aim for under 160 characters for GSM-7 or 70 for Unicode
- Avoid special characters when possible. Replacing "é" with "e" keeps encoding in GSM-7 and doubles your character budget
5. FAQ
Do I need a subscription to send SMS and WhatsApp notifications?
Yes. Notifications are only available with a subscription, and each channel requires a separate subscription.
How can I test Notifications?
You can immediately start creating templates and configuring workflows. Once you subscribe, you’ll receive 5 free notifications per channel. If you change your mind, you can cancel your subscription at any time.
Will I be charged for failed messages?
No. Only successfully delivered notifications are billed.
Is there any setup cost?
No. Once you enable the subscription, you only pay for successful notifications.
What channels are supported?
Currently, SMS and WhatsApp notifications are supported in Beta. Email will be available soon.
Can I track how many notifications I’ve used?
Yes. You can monitor usage directly from your dashboard.
Can I change or cancel my subscription anytime?
Yes. You can manage your subscription anytime from your Billing settings.
Why did my SMS notification cost more than expected? Your message likely used more than one segment. This happens when your message exceeds 160 characters (GSM-7) or 70 characters (Unicode), or when special characters like accented letters or emojis trigger Unicode encoding.
Does WhatsApp also use segments? No. WhatsApp pricing is per notification, regardless of message length.
